In a koi pond it makes a lot of sense to install an effective pre-filter in front of the actual filter in order to remove the coarsest dirt from the pond water. A completely automatic, reliable prefilter is the Aquaforte drum filter ATF, which will be presented in a little more detail below.

Aquaforte Drum Filter - Affordable Pre-Filter

If coarse dirt is removed from the pond water before it passes the filter, this has several advantages. The following filter does not clog up as quickly and therefore has to be cleaned less often. It also increases the longevity of the filter if coarse particles are fished out in advance. With the Aquaforte drum filter ATF there is also the fact that it regulates itself completely automatically and therefore works as if by itself.

Automatic mode of operation

The filter got its name from its large drum through which the water flows. This drum is covered by a very fine filter gauze made of stainless steel. All particles larger than 0.06 mm do not pass through this gauze and are retained. These dirt particles collect on the inside of the drum. The more particles there are on the inside, the weaker the water flow through the drum. The water level in the filter becomes unbalanced in and around the drum. This sends a signal to the controller, whereupon the drum is rinsed. Manual intervention is not necessary for this. The rinsing process is fully automatic. The dirt particles are flushed out of the drum with the rinsing water via a dirt drainage channel. The filtered water is fed from the drum filter into the main filter.

Innovative technology in the Aquaforte drum filter

The Aquaforte drum filter can be installed very low above the water level. 10 cm is sufficient. The controller has innovative software in the housing so that the drum filter can fulfill its extensive, automatic functions. In addition to the normal filter functions, safety options such as slow start, dry run protection, motor protection or manual flushing are also set. The motor protection means that the process stops automatically if there is a blockage.

Regardless of the degree of clogging, the filter is rinsed once an hour for 10 seconds. In order to not only filter out dirt particles but also kill germs or bacteria, an immersion UVC device can be installed in the drum filter.

No biological filtering

Purely mechanical filtering takes place in a drum filter. This means that dirt particles are filtered out of the water. Small particles under 0.06 mm or metabolic products such as ammonia are not filtered out of the water by a drum filter. For good water quality, however, it is important that these substances are also removed from the water. Therefore, a drum filter should always be followed by a module in which biological filtration takes place. One possibility is the Aquaforte biochamber, which is an ideal addition to the drum filter. This bio-chamber can be filled with different filter materials. The bacteria settle in the filter materials and convert the metabolic products of the Koi into harmless substances. The most important reaction here is the breakdown of ammonia into nitrite and further into nitrate. The biochamber can be filled with Eco Pond Chips, for example. To ensure that the bacteria on these chips are supplied with sufficient oxygen, it is advisable to attach an aerator hose to the bio-chamber. The chips are kept in motion by fine air bubbles and an optimal amount of oxygen is released into the water. After the filtering process, clear, clean water is released back into the pond.
